Retrieval practice
What you should be doing when studying for a course isn’t just “studying”. A large body of research has shown that simply studying materials over and over (for instance, looking over your notes repeatedly) is not the most effective way to learn.[^1]

What is retrieval practice in the context of note taking?
Tentatively, after writing a note, try to remember what you wrote without looking at the note. Either do this mentally or by writing it down. After recalling as much as you can remember, go back to the note and see how you did. Then repeat the process.
